In acknowledgment of the life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg,
The Bay Theatre will host special showings of the documentary “RBG”
and the biopic “On the Basis of Sex”.

“RBG”

   7:30 pm, Thursday, September 24

    PG | 1h 38min | Documentary, Biography | 2018

    Admission: $5

The 2018 documentary “RBG” presents the life, both professional and personal, of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. On the professional side, her career as a lawyer and as a Justice of the US Supreme Court are highlighted. Eliminating gender discrimination – both of females and males – was a prime focus of Ginsburg’s career. Although seen as a liberal-leaning justice, she is seen even more as a consensus builder among her Supreme Court colleagues. It is in that role as a consensus builder that RBG formed an unlikely friendship with conservative-leaning Justice Antonin Scalia. The role of consensus builder changed when the balance in the court shifted to the right. As a result, Ginsburg felt compelled to voice her dissenting view to her colleagues in the continuation of the want for equality for all. RBG’s legal ferocity belies the fact of her diminutive physical stature and generally soft-spoken nature. On the personal side, she was married for over fifty years to a fellow lawyer and law school colleague Martin D. Ginsburg until his death in 2010. Their household defied those stereotypical gender roles in certain respects, at a time in society where it would have been considered unique.

“On the Basis of Sex”

7:30 pm, Thursday, October 1

PG-13 | 2h | Biography, Drama | January 2019

Admission: $5

“On the Basis of Sex” is a 2019 American biographical legal drama film based on the life and early cases of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who became the second woman to serve on the United States Supreme Court. Directed by Mimi Leder and written by Daniel Stiepleman, it stars Felicity Jones as Ginsburg, with Armie Hammer, Justin Theroux, Jack Reynor, Cailee Spaeny, Sam Waterston, and Kathy Bates in supporting roles.
